I've Been Thinking . . .

. . . the numbers of visitors keeps going up on my site counter so I'm thinking there is still some interest in my little scrap blog.

Although I have moved on to other projects and interests in my life, the scrapbook files still remain on my external hard drive. If there is still interest in some of my old kits that the links have expired, I will upload them once again and put up new links.

So it is up to you the readers and subscribers. If you'd like those links to reappear, leave your comments, go on my facebook page or send me an email and we'll see what we can do.

It's been so long, I can hardly remember how to do this but with my love of all things Americana, I have to give you an offering for July 4th. You can click the preview to download.

I haven't given away a freebie since January 2009. It doesn't seem possible that it's been so long. I developed serious hand and spine issues since last I blogged. My husband declares it's all because I would spend at least 16 hours a day at the computer designing, blogging and chatting with friends that I've made through the digi-scrapping community.

This community is such a wonderful place for those of us who tend to be a little shy or living some place remote to reach out and find friends. It became a lonely place for me for a while without all of you in my world. I'll be back as much as possible - barring hand/back pain. BUT - you are all worth it - you enrich my life.

For now, seeing all the wonderful clusters that are out there, I've been considering making some of my own. Who knows what comes next? As always, I'm open to suggestions.

I'm Coming Back - Slowly

I can't stand being away from scrapping for much longer. It's been a dark place for a while. I had lost the use of my hands for several months due to arthritis and some major back issues. It took some time to figure that out. Then I lost two of my beloved Maltese dogs, Alfie and Dandy. They were old - but it never seems to be time to say goodbye.

Good news though. We have a new puppy to celebrate in the Maltese Scrappers home, his name is Louie. We add him to Ruffles, the dog you've all come to know and love from my Logo.

He is almost 5 months old now. We got him a couple weeks ago when we went to Arkansas to see my BH's mom. She knew we were grieving our loss so this was her way to help put the smile back in our hearts.

Who ever said Mothers-In-Law couldn't be terrific?

Louie is sleeping at my feet as I type and Ruffles is laying on the bed behind me. That's what I call Maltese heaven.

Back to Scrap - for the first time in months, I've been surfing the scrap blogs and visiting Digi-Free once again. It felt like visit family all over again. Happy to see old friends and sad to see those who are no longer blogging - but excited to see some new designers on the horizon who I have yet to discover.

To My Faithful Followers

I'm sure you've had to have noticed my lack of posting these past few months. As you know from reading my blog, I've had a lot of sickness in 2009 - like I've never experienced before. To add insult to injury, my hands have started to give out (too many stray pixels to capture : ). The doctor rumor is degenerative arthritis. Since I am a Christian, that means I'll just ask God to heal me and when He does - I'll give him the praise.

In the meantime, I need to rest my hands from designing / computer / piano. I will not be closing my blog because I want to come back. If I'm having a good day here and there, I'll pull something out of my collections of partially completed kits and gift you with some tidbits.

I'll miss you all so much. Your encouraging words and friendship these last couple of years have meant more to me than I could ever say.

Fall Pumpkintime

The kit I've been promising - added yesterday to my store at Life-Scrappers. After being a part of the competition at Stone Accents Studio, I realized how great a coordinating color kit can be. Although I love all things vintage, there is also something great about pieces that can go with everything. So lately, I've been expanding my horizons and trying new things.

Of course, I'm always trying new things. My dad always taught my brother and I that "you don't know that you can't do something unless you try it first. You'll usually find out that you can." I've followed that advice into adulthood - therefore I've learned so many things that I CAN DO. I'll never be that skinny, athletic model type person - but we all have undiscovered talents waiting to be found. All we have to do is try.

Fall Pumpkintime Sampler

It has once again been a couple of rough weeks. This has been my year it seems. We had to have Alfie, my first Maltese, to sleep. He was seventeen years old. He was my shadow - never letting me out of sight for a moment. Not having him here has been a huge loss to my husband and I since because we are childless, our Maltese dogs have taken that place in our hearts.

I've been working on this kit to submit to Stone Accents Studio for my entry in the finals of their New SAS-y Lady competition during their birthday bash. They wanted a kit that showed who I am as a designer. I think this is a good representation of my work. You'll see a few pieces that show the progression of my development as a designer as well as some of the new techniques I've been attempting.

It's time to vote one last time. (The round after this is decided by the current designers at the studio.)

Here's the process:

If you haven't registered, here's the link http://stoneaccentsstudioforum.com/forum/. You will be asked a series of questions - you have been referred by maltesescrapper.

The glitch in registration has been on the random question. It sometime asks for the fourth calendar month in English. For some reason it does not accept April. Just keep trying until it gives you a new question - then you'll be able to go to the next step.

You will then be sent an email to confirm your email address. Click the link given and it will take you back to the site. Your not done yet. A staff member of the studio will OK your registration and you should get another email (not always).

* Voting will will be until 2:00 tomorrow. The announcement of those moving on will be made on September 25.

I can't believe it!

I actually made it into Round 3 of the Stone Accents Studio SAS-y Lady Contest. Granted, I made it by the skin of my teeth thanks to my family and some Facebook friends voting for me. BUT, Round 3 - I'm still pinching myself. I stayed up half the night, hitting refresh to see when and if any votes came in. I'm sure I've driven my husband crazy by now talking about it.

To celebrate, I'm dropping this little treasure onto the web. It's from an upcoming kit that I've been working on called The Colonies. This is in tribute of my being a "Mayflower" descendant and the history I grew up with all around me. That will give you some hints as to what you'll find in this future kit.

The Road Home

It's been a difficult day. As many of you know, my husband is a pastor. At noon today, our youth pastor was in a serious traffic accident. We thought we were going to lose her. My husband is still at the hospital and I'm at home manning the phones to give updates to our parishioners.

But to thank all of you for your support I decided to put this kit that I had been making for my store at Life Scrappers up as a freebie for this week only. It's called the road home because these pictures were taken along the road and at the home of my mother-in-law who lives in Arkansas. SAS-y Lady Contest

I had no idea how stiff the competition was going to be for the Stone Accents Studio contest. These designers are actually out campaigning - buttons and all. I didn't know that's how it works. Here I've been just going along not many comments made and the other competitors are out telling all their non-digi friends how to log on, register and vote.

Oh well, there's always next year. I'll just keep plugging along and just enjoy my addiction to digi-scrapping. There's just something about taking a picture and seeing just a part of it that looks like art to me - extracting it - and then making it available for all the world to see. If you see it all as art like I do - then that's are great source of joy to me.

School Daze - Pt. 2 - Blog Train

All kinds of things are going on. Today was the day for the "Big Flea Bash" pt. 2 at our house. With three long-haired white dogs, there is never an end to the amount of fleas this time of year. My husband and I go into attack mode. They get flea-dipped, bathed and blow-dried. Marty takes on the task of picking off each individual flea and placing them in some vinegar water. He gets a kick out of seeing which dog has the most fleas. I'm embarrassed to tell you how many we are able to remove. Like I said it never ends.

In between baths, I've been working on this the second installment of the "School Daze" kit for the ADSDesigners Blog Train. This is a little alphabet I threw together for you. This is actual font software I used to use when I was a school teacher. It's in different formats (all on one page) for you to use. Some flattened, one psd, one with style and one without.

Next exciting thing!!!!! I told you yesterday that I've been busy at work updated some of my old projects and kits. But I've gotten to the place where I need to get into a busy store and start making a little money for the household to justify the hours I sit at the computer.

Coming Soon - Me

Yes it's true. I am back at my computer once again and soon will be creating.

I have joined the design team of another store: My Life and Scrap. With this new addition, a time for my work to come up a level has finally arrived. In preparing to upload product, I forced myself to go back through my old work with a critical eye.

I was mortified to say the least. Those early projects are light years away from the work I am doing now. They had fuzzy pictures - stray pixels - etc. Your faithfulness to my blog in spite of this has been noted. Thank you for being so kind in your comments even though some graphics were sub-par.

Though it has been a painful process - they say pain can make us stronger - and seeing our faults can only make us better designers. I do want to be the best I can be.

If you "purchased" through one of my stores, some of those early works: first I'd like to say I'm so sorry and if you contact me with the name of the product, I will do my best to fix it for you. Just let me know which graphic you need repaired.

NO - I'm Not Dead

Finally I decided to take the summer off. I'd been toying with the idea of quitting but I love my blog so much and it felt heart wrenching to give it up. So giving it a break was the next best idea. If I do design anything new or upload anything to my stores, I'll let you know.

After watching "Legally Blonde", you assume that having your nails done in a salon is the epitome of relaxation and pampering of ones self. That has not been my experience.

My first manicure was on the eve of my wedding. I believe I mentioned this experience in an earlier posting called My Wedding Story. In short, for that time I ended up with a trainee that ended up making my nails a quarter-inch thick and too long to function with.

A couple weeks ago was one of those days that the stress had been adding up and I felt that stopping, taking a deep breath and doing something for myself would make all the difference in the world. I decided to go for broke and even get the French manicure. What a treat!

While there, the pull of the pedicure chairs got stronger and stronger until I gave in to it. I'm sitting in the heated, vibrating chair wishing that it could go on forever. I peeked through one eye and noticed that the technician had gone over to talk with the owner (in another language). When she came back, she put on a pair of gloves and set to work as if she was on a mission.

After the pedicure, I went back over to have my polish put on. In broken English, the owner tells me to come back more often - I need it bad because (in loud voice) "YOU MESS". I told her that it was all a whim to come in that's why I didn't fix all up - but she just kept repeating "YOU MESS!" I leave a tip and then try to leave inconspicuously with sounds of "YOU MESS" burning in my ears.

My friends have always said that I don't have to go looking for adventure, it always finds me. Nothing happens in the boring, ordinary way for me. Maybe it's just because I see it as just one more funny story that I can pass on to you.

These flowers today are called belated because everything in my life feels belated right now. On Facebook I've called it the fog that has filled my brain. But you my friends, reminded me to come back to earth and blog once again. So here I am. Just click the preview to begin your download.

Girl's' Night Out

If you live anywhere within driving distance of Ypsilanti, Michigan and you don't have plans yet for this coming Monday night, you are invited to attend Girls' Night Out at Ypsilanti Assembly of God ~ 701 Holmes Road ~ Ypsilanti, MI 48197 @ 7:00 pm. I have known Sue Duffield for most of my life - her husband, Jeff, produced my first album back when I was on the road as a singer.

I went to one of her "Girls' Night Out" a month ago when she was in Hillsdale, Michigan. The ladies cried as she sang and laughed when she talked until they fell over laughing in the pews. What a great night!

Now she's coming to my church - chocolate NOT optional. If at all possible, you need to come and have a night out with the girls.

Rainy Wednesday Flowers CU

Have you noticed the incredible selection and colors of flowers that have been coming out this Spring, especially on the daisies. Deep or bright, they're all absolutely incredible. So if you don't mind, for a while I think I'm going to stick with flowers on my blog and yes they will all be CU even if I forget to to post that or put the wrong TOU in the download. My TOU on CU's is they're yours to put in kits, etc. Just don't let them be more than 25% of your collection.

I'm also looking to Wednesday to be my day to post on my blog so you know when to stop by. My life has gotten extremely busy which is a good thing - it keeps the melancholy away - but that makes it difficult to post every day like I've done in the past. Some weeks there may be more posts if I come across a great find and am able to take a picture of it.

For today, here is a small collection I call Rainy Wednesday Flowers since it's been raining on and off all day. I've sneaked outside between showers to throw some grass seed on the lawn. Just click the preview to download.

Easter Flowers

I don't know about your household, but around here the weeks leading up to Easter are crazy at best. There are just so many activities leading up to preparation for Easter Sunday, when the day arrives - it seems we are in a daze.

Spring

I'm back! I'll take it in small doses to see how it goes but I miss you all so much I couldn't stay away. Here are a few little primitive items for Spring as well as an early Easter basket for you to fill.

Friday night we showed the movie "Fireproof" at our church. We started the evening with pizza, salad, pop and cookies and then went into the Sanctuary for the movie. Then we passed out copies of the book "love dare" that is mentioned in the movie. It was so great! Lots of visitors, tissues and laughs all in one night. Who says you can't have that much fun at church.

No Need For Sympathy

Thanks for all your comments and questions of concern regarding my recent absences. Originally I was not going to talk about what's happening because I did not want to be a DQ (Drama Queen). But now I decided to blog my journal of events in hopes that helps someone out there in cyberland.

As I've told my fellow designers at Life-Scrappers, I believe the change has come. The menopause change that is. Like I said earlier, I'm talking about this for sympathy but to let others know that you aren't going crazy and so we can laugh at ourselves as we get through this.

I really did think I was going crazy. My first time thinking that was when I had to go to Babies-R-Us to buy a shower gift. I was at the check out and burst into tears telling the cashier my entire life's story and why there were no children. Later that day I went to Sav-A-Lot and when bagging my groceries I felt overwhelmed because the groceries weren't organized in the cart and started crying.

By the time I got in the car, I was openly sobbing. I tried calling my best friend on the phone (who is a guy) and got his voicemail. I'm sure my message sounded insane and make matters worse, he returned my call. Embarrassment grows. What's funny about all this is that I've never been a woman who cries very often. I may sniffle a little at a sad movie but still yearn for that release that only comes with a good cry.

My poor husband. He's been so patient. He's gotten to the place that when he walks into the room and takes one look at my face - he immediately walks towards me and just hugs on me and tries to be as helpful releaving my load around the house.

My other place of solace has been a return to my music. In my 20's, I traveled the church circuit as a singer. I was able to travel the world doing the thing that I loved the most. It was a difficult day when I had to give it up and "settle down". So now to get back to that balanced feeling, I sit down at the piano with an open Praise and Worship book and play and sing my way through the book and spend time with God.

For those of you out there going through the same thing, you're not alone, you're not going crazy, we'll get through this together.

Baby Jambo

You ask, "Baby Jambo? where did that name come from?"

My friends, Carrie and Jason, are expecting their first child. Carrie is our church's youth pastor and Jason the worship leader. Jason is like our adopted son who even lived with us for several month before their marriage and is the stereotypical guitar playing right up to the spiked hair.

Ever since Carrie became pregnant (even before they knew they were expecting a boy) started calling the baby "Rambo". It's been a running dialogue. So, one day my husband was teasing them about the whole musician thing and wondering why it was "Jambo" instead of "Rambo". For Marty and I the baby will now always be "Jambo". This kit was inspired by the wrapping paper that I bought for their baby shower this passed Monday night.

St. Patricks Day Offering

There's no explanation for it - I just need some time off. I've been working but more on tutorials and learning new techniques to pass on to you all. I am working on a baby kit that I call "Baby Jambo" named after the soon arrival of my friends Jason and Carrie who are expecting - soon.

I had made this little paper for you a couple of weeks ago, before life got in the way and I wanted to let you have it before it got too late after St. Patrick's Day. I had to offer you something since my best friend's name is Patrick Saint. You'll recognize him from "Rick on the Farm".

Primitive Papers

Hello - sorry that once again I've been so busy. Besides work and life, there's also been time spent organizing computer files, studying other blogs, making new overlays and items to use for the creation of graphics. I'm leaning towards making the usual scrapbook items as well as my signature extractions - using them in tandem and utilizing a color palette more in my work.

I've also been thinking about making more papers. In the past my work has leaned heavily upon elements which is interesting because a lot of blogs I've read lately lean more the other direction. The main goal is to always be striving to learn and develop. That makes the blog more interesting for me as hopefully for you as well.

Here it is, one of the huge projects I've been working on. The idea came to me one day while I was sitting at the local "International House of Pancakes" (IHOP) waiting for my dear sweet husband to meet me for breakfast. There it was - these cute little photos of license plates from different states with different spellings of pncaks. Light bulb scrap moment.

How many times have I been working on a layout and wanted a cute way to note what state the pic was in - besides writing it in my journal. At least a cutesy way to do it. This took forever to do but I'm so pleased with the results. All 50 US states plus DC. (coming soon with some Australia plates) The preview doesn't contain them all - just the states that I've had the pleasure to live in.

In your designer toolbox, you can never have too many flowers or too many colors of flowers. It's kind of like life, you can never have too much color or too many flowers. Flowers are one of the things that I really enjoy about my job. There are so many varieties, I've started taking my camera to work. I average about 70 photos every time I go.

I know - I haven't been around much lately. Your advice has finally sunk in for me to take care of myself. It seems I've been sick more than well this passed year so I'm slowing down a little to improve my over all condition. That means the blog will not be updated every single day (but most days). Sorry I've been MIA. I've been working on a huge project for the store actually two projects that are totally unique from anything I've seen being done yet. I'm still playing with it's best application to scrapping but I know it's very current and exciting.

6th Picture Challenge

I took this picture of my old fashioned teddy bear that I used in my blog and as a pattern to make more teddy bears. Also in the picture is Alfie and Ruffles, 2 of my Maltese babies. Dandy's not allowed on the bed for good reason. Ruffles is the doggy used as my logo and for all the dress up pics you see of my babies.

Farewell to Hearts

When this season started, I told you how much I love hearts. After making heart elements for a month, I am so ready to take a break from them. They're beautiful and make me smile, but I for one am ready to start doing something new. Any suggestions?

For the rest of the day, I'll be adding to this post all the last hearts that I had started working on for this Valentines Day that never made it into any collection. I am also adding my part of the January Collab kit from Life-Scrappers. Make sure you check out the rest of the "All Things New" collection as well as all the other cool things at Life-Scrappers.

While making this lace heart today, I put in a movie: "Nights in Rodanthe". I wish someone told me it had a sad ending. It was such a great love story - then I spent the next half hour crying my eyes out at how sad it was.

Don't Fence Me In

Another insanely busy yet satisfying day. No computer time for me. I did save some time to give you this background paper I made, mimicking primitive quilting fabric. I thought these little picket fences would make some cute borders. I'm partial to white picket fences since I live in the stereotypical white Cape Cod house with white picket fence all around protecting my furbabies from escape.

Playing Dress-up

What an incredible day I've had today!!! My friend, Connie, from church took me out for the day. Of course the first thought that came to mind was can I afford the time away from designing but I hadn't spent time with Connie for a long (she even named her dog after me - is that a compliment? hmmmmmmmmmm). She had put a lot of thought into the day - trying to think of things she thought I would enjoy doing.

So we went to Plymouth, Michigan. It is just the coolest little town. It is prime real estate for crafters and ladies eat out places. We started out at the Cozy Cafe. They had the most incredible sweet roll that I couldn't eat half of. Then we went to the Town Peddler.

They were kind enough to let me take pictures of the antiques and other goodies. I think it was almost creative overload for me which is what I was needing just about now. This place is so packed, it took at least 3 hours just to walk up and down the aisles and I pooped out before we even got to see it all. All I can say is WOW! If you live in or near Michigan, it's a definite stop for craft and antique lovers.

I'm sure you'll see some of the new ideas resulting from this trip in the days to come. Luckily I had started on today's elements before leaving home because I'm ready for bed - after watching the bachelor : D Just click my little preview to download.

Two Quilts

Marty and I went to the Athletic Club today. It was so great! The pool area feels like you're in an indoor water park. I've been wanting a place to swim - this is that and so much for. My health has not been good for a long time so this is one of the ways I'm fighting back.

But enough of that - you want your freebie. Since it's been such a busy day, I decided to make something along the sewing theme. For years, I used to love making quilts. There's nothing like cuddling up under a quilt on a cold day and we've been having a lot of cold days. BUT my linen closet has no room for anything else since I have so many quilts. Today I learn how to piece together a quilt digitally. Boy does that ever go together quicker. Here are two quilts - a rail fence in child print fabric and a basket quilt in some rich colors.

Man Stuff

When I first got married, then was one rude awakening that I did not expect. Men can be slobs. They walk in the front door and everything in their pockets ends up on the closest flat surface. If lucky their clothes make it to the bedroom before they just fall off. I'm not always that lucky. My dear sweet, wonderful husband has this habit of covering every surface with stuff and every chair. It's become a joke that every seating service in the living room is always full of something like his computer in one chair and his overcoat in the other . . .

Today's freebie is a tribute to those actions. I call it man stuff because it is literally all those things - most of which I took off the fireplace mantel - where they ended up today when he got home. Please click the preview to download.

Pearls & 1st Made for Store Item

It's been a busy time uploading to the new store at Life-Scrappers.com. Thus the new packaging so you'll know it's exclusively at Life-Scrappers. One thing I always look for is a unique way to journal my Layouts. Notice, I said unique. That's what I love. So here is the first item that was made for the store at Life-Scrappers. Come check it out - look around and find some others items made by me that you have never seen on the blog. Just click to look around.

I've been emptying out my jewelry box again. The other thing I'm always looking for is gems and pearls to complete layouts. I used to spend so much time surfing your websites looking for them until it finally clicked in my sometimes slow brain - you've got an entire piece of furniture filled with trinkets and gems - and you've got a scanner. Duh! I know these aren't all pearls, but I couldn't resist throwing in this little heart shaped gem. As I'm writing, there is an entire drawer filled with jewelry sitting on the bed behind me.

Valentine's Day Bracelet

This bracelet was taken directly from my jewelry box and laid on my scanner. It took a long time to extract because with some metals, there are no short cuts. You have to erase each and every pixel which means with my eyesight, my view is set at 400% to get them. After I erase as many as I think are there, I add a new layer and fill it with black then make it the bottom layer.

That's when I see all those little stray pixels that are invisible on a transparent background. I took the extra time on this piece because this was once a Valentine's gift from my dear sweet husband. (What a love he is . . . but he'd hate it that I'm bragging on him to the whole world.)

A New Day

Not matter how you voted, it would be hard not to be moved by the sights and sounds of this historic day in America. To see people of all walks of life, all ethnic groups standing side by side with tears in their eyes - a sign of excitement and unity in our country.

According to Scripture we are to pray for our leaders - so let's begin again (a paraphrased quote from our new president's inaugural speech). Let's go forward with hope and joy in this new day. To commemorate this day, here are a few elements to go with it. Just click the preview.

What an incredible weekend? Hectic, exciting, grueling . . .

It got to 32 degrees below zero. A couple pipes at the church burst from the cold so my husband's office and basement were flooded. Our worship leader was sick so I got to lead worship and run sound - at the same time. Got to scrub the floors at work on my hands and knees. Laid hands on someone, prayed for them and they were instantly healed right before my eyes. Not too bad a weekend.

Have I told you yet that I love my new camera? Or, the fact that I get to see some of the most beautiful flowers when I go to work. Look what I did on my lunch hour today.

Looking at a vase of gorgeous flowers made me think about what my husband always gets me for Valentines Day - a dozen red roses. Today's the day I make my big announcement.

I am now a designer at Life-Scrappers.com. I waited to share my news because I wanted to be sure that I had some product uploaded there before telling you. That's probably because I was so excited, I was still pinching myself to believe it was for real. I had to see pictures of my kits there at the site before I could actually come to believe.

So - for that reason - for the next couple of weeks - I'll be giving you little element packs like the one below so that I have the time to transfer everything to the store. BUT - never fear - I may just give you an element or two at a time but I'll make sure they're what I think is extra special - that you can't find everywhere else.

But that also means, if you have an item that you are looking for and can't find anywhere, let me know. Making one special element at a time is very doable and also keeps me from racking my brain to find something different. So - request away. Maybe not full kits, but that certain something that you're looking for to make that page complete.

Snowplay Sampler

Another nightmare day with a malware virus on my computer, but finally it's gone. A synopsis of my week: phone drops in the toilet - it gone for good, my computer (which I live on) gets a bug, my constant 16 year old doggy companion falls down the stairs, snowed in, a drunk comes in to work and I'm the one in charge of taking care of it, gain 4 pounds, no food in the house but can't get out due to snow, can't sell our truck, second dog slips a disk (now we wait a week to see if we need to put him down). Those are a few of the highlights.

Usually I extract a really difficult photo piece when I'm stressed, but now the snail of a computer stresses me out. But I have peace. I am so glad that I have my faith. That's what gets me through with a smile.

As we speak, I'm backing up all my scrapbook files that haven't already been backed up. You know how long that's going to take. I'm on DVD disc number 7 already. My fun has always been my post for the day . . .

. . . so ladies (and some gents), it's not a large freebie but it's one I had fun creating. It's a pic of one of my heart necklaces and a silver hinge combined. I thought it would be perfect for the Valentine season. Hope you like it.

Little Bits of Hardware

OK - my offerings haven't been the same. There hasn't been enough time to make a kit every day, just little bits and pieces. There is a reason. I just can't tell you yet - but exciting news is soon to come (at least for me it's exciting).

If you're like me, you can always use more hardware so here are some little bits and pieces of just that. You do have to notice the clarity of my new work though. My new camera has been taking incredible pictures. The only problem is, it seems to take more time to extract those higher megapixels.

My Teddy

This is my personal Teddy Bear. For years it sat on a little pouting stool in the corner of my various apartments, parsonages and homes. Some place where I can always see it and smile and remember my friend, Debi.

People who meet me find that I am very outgoing and can talk to anyone anywhere about anything which is true. But as they get to know me a little better they find that my being outgoing is learned behavior. Actually, I can be very shy and reserved especially around people that I really like and want to be friends with. People never really believe me when I tell them this fact because I've learned to hide it well.

It's most obvious when I am in a group situation or a party. Now - I can stand up and sing or talk on a stage in front of thousands of people and have done so but when it comes to one on one . . . I'm so awkward, I embarrass myself so I become real quiet which may be perceived as being stuck up. Definitely not the case. I'm terrified!

Due to this, it's always been hard for me to make those very deep, lifetime long friendships. I always feel like once people get to know me, they won't like me anymore. I do have tons of friends - but those that I can call a best friend are few and far between.

When I lived in Warren, Ohio, Debi was my best friend. In fact, it took my mom nudging me in Debi's direction for us to meet because mom knew we'd be a perfect match. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven after meeting Debi. She was so much fun, loved to pull pranks, loved to sit and cry with me during a sad movie. I can't count how many times that I'd show up at her house and crash on her couch because we stayed up so late talking.

Debi was also the type that could do anything, be anything that she set her mind to. (except cook) She decorated her house to perfection - not that it was always kept to perfection - but that was also part of her appeal. She didn't make you feel like you had to be perfect to be around her.

She was also very crafty. Always making some project. Sometimes she even took extreme patience and taught me. Below is an example of something we made together. My favorite little Teddy Bear. I've kept it for over 25 years. My brother also has one in his home, sitting in a corner and in a place of honor.

I just wanted to show you all something that is special to me just as you are all very special to me. I'm not giving this image away, yet. I'm using it to make a pattern to make a lot my Teddys.

More Shells

I love conch shells. Ever since I was a child, there was a strong fascination for this large ocean shell. It started when first shown that a conch can be held up to your ear and you would hear the sound of the ocean. Not only that, it was beautiful and came in all shapes, sizes and colors.

Then as a teenager I learned something else about the conch. My father loved to wake me up in the morning and Dad can be a little ornery in a fun kind of way. After the alarm clock would beep, he would walk into my room, flip on the lights, open the window blinds, pull off the covers and start singing "This is The Day That The Lord Has Made" at the top of his lungs.

I'd grown and put the pillow over my head. Seeing that method of waking me up didn't work, he would go down to the basement and get his conch shell that had the end cut off. He'd come up close to the bed and blow. I think the entire neighborhood could hear the sound that conch would make. I'd be sure to get up just to make it stop.

After graduating from college, I learned more about the conch when I went on a missions trip to the Bahamas. There are so many stories I could share about that trip but I'll save some for another day. While we were there, almost every meal included some kind of conch. The people would catch them in the morning and their wives would cook them up for us. We had conch chowder, conch fritters, conch salad, conch burritos, etc. We lived on conch because the people we were there working with were poor and conch was free and plentiful.

It's chewy and tastes like chicken. : ) Maybe not, but I learned to love it. At the airport before leaving, I even bought some fried conch. The snack bar there served conch like we serve French fries.

So here is a collection of shells that includes several different kinds of conch shells. This will probably be my last gift of shells (for a little while). I guess I'm still just a little homesick for Florida. It doesn't help when family is always giving you weather updates from the south.

Just Playing CU

I am so tired. I've been working all day on an end of year video for my church and of course I didn't get the pictures to work with until Sunday and today. Now I am just done, but I couldn't sleep unless I had something for you. Here is another example of playing with my new camera.
